Juneteenth Celebration

A Salute to Progress: Juneteenth Observance in the U.S. Armed Forces

Juneteenth (June 19th) is a significant date in American history, marking the day in 1865 when Union General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston, Texas, and informed enslaved African Americans of their freedom, two years after President Abraham Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation.

Here are some reasons why Juneteenth should be important to U.S. military veterans and active duty personnel:

  1. Remembrance of Shared History: The U.S. military is a diverse institution composed of individuals from all races, ethnicities, and backgrounds. Recognizing Juneteenth allows military personnel to appreciate the shared history of struggle and progress that has shaped the nation they defend.
  2. Principles of Freedom and Equality: The U.S. military is tasked with the protection of American ideals of freedom and equality. Juneteenth is a poignant reminder of the fight against slavery, a struggle to uphold these ideals within the United States itself.
  3. Understand the Struggle for Civil Rights: Understanding the struggle for civil rights, which continued long after the end of slavery, can provide military personnel with a more comprehensive view of the nation's history. The U.S. military has played roles in various civil rights struggles, from integration of the armed forces to providing support during the Civil Rights Movement.
  4. Respect for Diversity: The U.S. military is increasingly diverse. Recognizing Juneteenth can foster an environment of respect and inclusivity. Celebrating it can help build cohesion and mutual understanding among service members from various backgrounds.
  5. Lessons of Perseverance and Unity: Juneteenth's significance offers lessons in perseverance, resilience, and unity. These are qualities that military personnel are expected to uphold. Recognizing the significance of Juneteenth can inspire and remind them of the power of resilience and unity in overcoming adversity.
  6. Educational Value: Juneteenth provides an opportunity to learn more about a significant aspect of American history. This understanding can contribute to a well-rounded worldview and better decision-making skills, both critical qualities for military personnel.
  7. Civic Duty: Military service members pledge to defend the Constitution and, by extension, the rights it guarantees for all citizens. Celebrating Juneteenth is a reaffirmation of this commitment to defend the rights and freedoms of all Americans, not just a select few.

Remembering and recognizing Juneteenth allows military personnel to honor the past, understand the present, and shape a more inclusive future. In this sense, Juneteenth holds value not only for military veterans and active duty personnel but for all Americans.

Here are some of the best ways for All Americans to Celebrate Juneteenth!

Juneteenth is a time for celebration, education, and reflection. Here are some ways all Americans can observe and celebrate this significant day:

  1. Educate Yourself and Others: Learn about the history of Juneteenth and the struggles of African Americans throughout U.S. history. Share this knowledge with friends, family, and colleagues.
  2. Attend Celebrations and Events: Many cities and communities host Juneteenth parades, festivals, concerts, and other celebratory events. These events often feature music, food, and performances that celebrate African American culture.
  3. Support Black-Owned Businesses: Juneteenth is a great day to intentionally support Black-owned businesses. Buying products or services from these businesses can contribute to economic equality.
  4. Read Works by African American Authors: Literature can provide in-depth perspectives on the African American experience. Consider reading books by African American authors, both historical and contemporary.
  5. Watch Movies and Documentaries: There are many excellent films and documentaries that explore African American history and culture, including the history of Juneteenth.
  6. Reflect on Current Issues: Juneteenth is an appropriate time to reflect on current social and racial justice issues. This can lead to a greater understanding of the ongoing struggles faced by African Americans and inspire action.
  7. Volunteer or Donate: Many non-profit organizations focus on supporting African American communities or promoting racial justice. Volunteering your time or donating money to these causes can make a meaningful difference.
  8. Listen to African American Music: Music is a profound aspect of African American culture. You could create a playlist featuring African American musicians and songwriters to celebrate Juneteenth.
  9. Have Meaningful Conversations: Use Juneteenth as an opportunity to engage in discussions about race, inequality, and how we can all work toward a more equitable society.
  10. Cook and Share a Meal: Food plays an important role in celebrations. Cook traditional African American dishes and share them with friends, family, or neighbors.

Remember, Juneteenth is not only a celebration but also an important reminder of the long road toward freedom and equality. It is a day to reflect, learn, and take steps toward a more inclusive future.

Program offering $75 million for Veterans Housing

SACRAMENTO - The Veterans Housing and Homelessness Prevention program (VHHP) is making $75 million in funding available, beginning November 8, 2019, to assist in developing housing opportunities for California's Veterans, especially those at risk of homelessness or experiencing temporary or chronic homelessness.  Awards will be made to qualifying developers and nonprofit entities to construct, acquire, rehabilitate, or preserve affordable multifamily housing for our veterans and their families.

"Our Veterans deserve the very best housing solution we can provide," said CalVet Secretary, Vito Imbasciani MD. "VHHP has become the beacon of hope for our veterans experiencing homelessness or facing housing instability. With the help of our partners, HCD, and CalHFA, at risk veterans in California can find a place to call home."

"The VHHP program is helping veterans regain a sense of place, pride, and most importantly, peace," said Acting HCD Director, Doug McCauley. "The millions of men and women who were brave enough to serve our country should not have to fight another battle once they return home."

On any given night, nearly 11,000 veterans experience homelessness in California, while countless veteran households face the instability of severe housing cost burden. Housing instability and homelessness among women veterans with children and veterans with disabilities are also on the rise. The service-rich communities being developed through VHHP program funding employ the Housing First model and address many of the challenges that vulnerable veterans face and support their movement toward housing stability.
