Stand Down is a military term designating that a combat unit has temporarily moved out of the field and back to base camp for rest and rehabilitation. Homeless Veterans are, in some ways, comparable to soldiers in a war zone – living exposed in the field, surviving by their wits with limited rations, and enduring extreme conditions.

The Veterans Administration's latest 2022 estimated Homeless Veterans "Point In Time" Count

The national snapshot of Veteran homelessness showed that:

  • The total number of Veterans who experienced homelessness was 33,129 – a decrease of 11% over January 2020, the last year a full PIT Count was conducted.
  • The estimated number of Veterans experiencing homelessness in America has declined by 55.3% since 2010.
  • Breaking this down further, 19,565 Veterans experienced sheltered homelessness, and 13,564 Veterans experienced unsheltered homelessness.
    • Veterans who experience sheltered homelessness often live in places such as emergency shelters, transitional housing programs or other supportive settings.
    • Veterans who experience unsheltered homelessness live in places not meant for human habitation, such as cars, parks, sidewalks, abandoned buildings and literally on the street.

The next PIT Count will take place in January 2024.

Veterans comprise 10.6% of all homeless in the U.S. and are 2x as likely to become homeless versus those who didn't serve in the military. With just under 11,000, California easily topped all states with the most homeless veterans in the country with the next being Florida, at just over 2,500.

While the overall number of homeless veterans did go down in America, San Diego City and County was the only major area to see a significant increase at 23 percent from the previous year.

Even more alarming is that with 1,312 – if San Diego County was its own state – it would have more homeless Veterans than 45 states & the District of Columbia.

The North County Veteran Stand Down offers Veterans much needed services to empower them to become productive members of our community. For more details visit them today at: https://NCStandDown.org

A Goal Within Reach

The goal of ending homelessness among Veterans is within reach—and in fact is already happening community by community.

Here’s what we must do to further this progress and sustain these gains:

  • Maintain government investments that are supporting effective interventions to prevent homelessness among Veterans and rapidly re-house those who become homeless, much like those communities and states that have already announced an end to Veteran homelessness.
  • Keep up our relentless outreach to Veterans in need.
  • Collaborate with governments, employers and community-based entities to house, employ and serve Veterans exiting homelessness.

Learn more about VA’s homeless programs and get involved. If you know a Veteran who is homeless or at imminent risk of becoming homeless, refer him or her to a local VA Medical Center, where homeless coordinators are ready to help.

Veterans and their families can also call 1-877-4AID-VET to be connected to VA services.

DOD Warrior Games Kick-Off in San Diego June 2 – 12

JOINT BASE LANGLEY EUSTIS, Va. – The 2023 Department of Defense Warrior Games Challenge, hosted by the U.S. Army Training and Doctrine Command, kicks off next week at Naval Air Station North Island in San Diego, Calif.

From June 2-12, more than 200 wounded, ill, or injured warrior athletes will compete in adaptive sports as part of their recovery journeys, highlighting their resiliency, dedication, and determination. These athletes, representing the U.S. Army, Marine Corps, Navy, Air Force, and Special Operations Command, will go head-to-head in 11 adaptive sports, including archery, track, field, swimming, rowing, shooting, powerlifting, cycling, wheelchair basketball, sitting volleyball, and wheelchair rugby.

“It’s an honor to provide an opportunity for these inspiring warriors to come together as part of an elite and premier adaptive sports and recovery event,” said Gen. Gary Brito, commander of U.S. Army Training and Doctrine Command. “Military adaptive sports programs help wounded service members and veterans build strength and endurance. These warrior athletes have overcome tremendous obstacles, and what we’ll be witnessing next week is truly recovery in real time.”

This is the first time the DoD Warrior Games will be held in San Diego. Audiences across the globe are invited to experience the action and inspiration of the event through the official Warrior Games livestream broadcast, which can be accessed on the Warrior Games website at DoDWarriorGames.com.

First held in 2010, Warrior Games celebrates the resiliency and dedication of wounded, ill, and injured active duty and veteran U.S. military service members. The Warrior Games serves to enhance the recovery and rehabilitation of wounded warriors by providing them exposure to adaptive sports.

Fifth round of Veterans Housing and Homelessness Prevention

Program offering $75 million for Veterans Housing

SACRAMENTO - The Veterans Housing and Homelessness Prevention program (VHHP) is making $75 million in funding available, beginning November 8, 2019, to assist in developing housing opportunities for California's Veterans, especially those at risk of homelessness or experiencing temporary or chronic homelessness.  Awards will be made to qualifying developers and nonprofit entities to construct, acquire, rehabilitate, or preserve affordable multifamily housing for our veterans and their families.

"Our Veterans deserve the very best housing solution we can provide," said CalVet Secretary, Vito Imbasciani MD. "VHHP has become the beacon of hope for our veterans experiencing homelessness or facing housing instability. With the help of our partners, HCD, and CalHFA, at risk veterans in California can find a place to call home."

"The VHHP program is helping veterans regain a sense of place, pride, and most importantly, peace," said Acting HCD Director, Doug McCauley. "The millions of men and women who were brave enough to serve our country should not have to fight another battle once they return home."

On any given night, nearly 11,000 veterans experience homelessness in California, while countless veteran households face the instability of severe housing cost burden. Housing instability and homelessness among women veterans with children and veterans with disabilities are also on the rise. The service-rich communities being developed through VHHP program funding employ the Housing First model and address many of the challenges that vulnerable veterans face and support their movement toward housing stability.

Applications are due on February 13, 2020. To assist applicants, workshops are planned for developers, sponsors, and other interested parties at the following locations:
