Today’s #VeteranOfTheDay is Marine Corps Veteran Jason Dunham.
Cpl. Jason Dunham served during the Iraq War with the 3rd Battalion, 7th Marines. He was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor for deliberately falling on a grenade, using his own body as a shield to save him fellow marines.
Jason was born on November 10, 1981 in Scio, New York, which was coincidentally the 206th anniversary of the founding of the Marine Corps. He joined the Marine Corps after graduating from Scio High School in 2000, and served as a security force sentry at Naval Submarine Base Kings Bay, Georgia, until 2003. In 2004, he was deployed to Iraq and stationed in Al-Karabilah, where he served as squad leader.Continue reading
John Basilone is the only enlisted Marine to have receive both the Medal of Honor and the Navy Cross, the nation’s top two medals for combat valor.
A legendary and much honored figure in Marine Corps history is slated to receive another tribute next week at Camp Pendleton.
Navy Secretary Ray Mabus is scheduled to visit the base Tuesday to speak about a future destroyer being named after the late Marine Gunnery Sgt. John Basilone.
Later that same day, he’s expected to travel to Treasure Island to announce that an upcoming Navy replenishment oiler will be named for another departed leader — gay rights activist Harvey Milk.
Basilone already had a warship named in his honor; it was an older-generation destroyer that was decommissioned in 1977.
In addition, city leaders in Raritan, N.J., erected a statue of their hometown hero in 1948. To this day, the borough holds a parade in his honor each September.
Business owners in San Diego’s Little Italy neighborhood dedicated Piazza Basilone in 2003, a public square that memorializes Basilone in a sculpted bust and pays homage to other Italian-Americans who gave their lives defending the United States.

1. California Solar Initiative (CSI)
This program offers cash back for installing solar on your home or business. The CSI provides incentives for photovoltaic system installations to customers of the state’s three investor-owned utilities: Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E), Southern California Edison (SCE), and San Diego Gas and Electric (SDG&E).
The CSI Program provides upfront incentives for photovoltaic systems installed on existing residential homes, as well as existing and new commercial, industrial, government, non-profit, and agricultural properties within the service territories of PG&E, SCE and SDG&E.
2. Single-Family Affordable Solar Homes (SASH)
SASH intends to decrease the expense of owning a solar system by providing incentives that are larger than those in the general CSI program. SASH provides qualified low-income homeowners fixed, up front, capacity-based incentives to help offset the upfront cost of a solar electric system.
3. New Solar Homes Partnership (NSHP)
The NHSP provides financial incentives and other support to home builders. It encourages the construction of new, energy efficient solar homes that save homeowners money on their electric bills and protect the environment.
